Chapter 9

“I can’t believe you broke his hand!”

Since the friends had slept late into the day, they saw no reason to stay behind and set up camp themselves. If they were being honest, each of them was secretly rather relieved to put some distance between them and the shifters. So with parting waves and smiles of forced cheer they headed off into the forest, walking as quickly as they could beneath the rays of the setting sun.

“I mean...you just broke it! Right there!” Katerina shook her head, having repeated the same thing on a loop for the last half mile. “I can’t believe you did that!”

“Why not?” Dylan asked reasonably. “He broke mine.”

She opened her mouth to reply, then shut it again. “...that’s a fair point.”

With a backwards grin, he quickened his pace and fell in step beside Tanya—the only person who’d yet to sleep since waking up to the screams of a dying bear. The girl was a picture of defiance, never willing to admit defeat, but her eyelids were drooping and she had begun to sway.

“Tired?” he asked with a smile.

She startled in alarm, then shot him a defensive glare. “What—no.”

He nodded sagely. “Right...”

A second later he scooped her into the air, waving her around for a moment before plopping her down right on his shoulders. She screamed, protested, then closed her eyes all in the space of a few seconds, resting her head on top of his after making a valiant promise not to drool.

Katerina grinned, staring after them before suddenly pausing on the trail.

While Aidan had deliberately volunteered to scout up ahead, where it wouldn’t matter that no one was really talking to him, Cassiel had drifted by himself to the very back of the group. Rather than his usual attentiveness the enchanting fae was completely tuning out the rest of the forest, lost in his own world. Nothing but centuries of muscle memory were keeping him moving gracefully through the trees, and when Katerina tapped him lightly on the shoulder he jumped a mile.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured, staring down at her, “did you say something?”

She studied him for a moment before gesturing up the trail. Tanya was now completely passed out on Dylan’s shoulders, courtesy of her own royal piggy-back. The ranger had glanced up when she finally stopped talking, but made no attempt to swing her down. Instead he simply took her wrists and ankles in both hands, smiling to himself as they continued walking up the trail.

“Do you see that?” the queen asked quietly, grinning as Tanya broke her promise and began drooling in his hair. “They’ve certainly warmed to each other, haven’t they?”

In the beginning, the two shifters had fought like cats and dogs. She was the little sister he’d never wanted. He was the older brother she both tortured and adored. Now? They still fought like cats and dogs. But there was open affection behind it. And a great deal of booze.

Cassiel glanced up with a faint smile, then nodded.

“They have.”

Since the departure of his sister, the fae hadn’t said much.
